Founder and president of The African School of Economics (ASE), Dr. Leonard Wantchekon, was one of three prize winners who were selected on April 21, 2023 as “pioneers of a cosmopolitan, economically liberal, and public-spirited society” by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. He was recognized not only for his work as a political economist and historian, but his commitment to the innovation of higher education on the African continent through the groundbreaking African School of Economics. This year’s theme was Africa, with the two other prize winners being Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Director General, World Trade Organization) and Dr. Eleni Gabre-Madhin (Chief Innovation Officer, United Nations Development Program).

The Kiel institute presented their extensive reasoning for Wantchekon’s win, stating

“Leonard Wantchekon is not only an outstanding political economist, economic historian, and development economist, but also a far-sighted and assertive scientific entrepreneur… The ASE curriculum reflects Leonard Wantchekon’s unique perspective on economic issues by combining rigorous methodological training with multidisciplinary content on Africa’s past and present.”

Through the multidisciplinary, internationally recognized education at the African School of Economics, young African economists can apply their knowledge to real life social problems via the various research opportunities available at ASE. Dr. Wantchekon, along with the two other outstanding and highly accomplished African prize winners, are some of the Pan-African visionaries shaping economic policy, development, and empowerment of the African continent.
